How the burst fade mullet is built

Both keep length at the back; the difference is how the sides are cleared.
The low taper mullet only tidies the sideburns and neckline, so the sides stay fairly full and the shape reads as a softer mullet.
The burst fade mullet clears a half circle around each ear, often down to skin, which makes the gap between the short sides and the long back much more dramatic.
Ask for it exactly
1“Burst fade around the ear, skin at the shortest point, blended out to about a #3 at the edge of the arc.”

4Decide how far behind the ear the arc should reach; a wider burst leaves a narrower strip of length at the back.
Holds the mullet shape well, but the back can look heavy; ask for weight to be taken out internally rather than shortened.
Wavy hair
Movement at the back suits the shape; a little sea salt spray helps the length separate.
Curly hair
Curls shrink, so leave the back longer than you want it to look and check the arc dry.
How it grows out
Week 1
The arc is crisp; the skin around the ear starts to show stubble after a few days.
Weeks 2–3
The arc blurs into the side first, while the mullet still looks deliberate.
Weeks 3–5
Re-fade the sides. The back can usually go longer between trims than the sides.
If you skip a cut
The sides and back grow toward one length and the mullet shape disappears before the back looks overgrown.
